Natural Resources Canada Re-classifies AeroTech Model Rocket Motors

Natural Resources Canada (NRC) has revised its shipping classification for a number of popular AeroTech model rocket motors. The motors are now classified as UN class 1.4C.

Previously, these motors were classified as class 1.3C in Canada which made them extremely difficult and expensive to ship. The new classification enables these motors to be shipped using the same means as other model rocket motors, and will help to make them more widely available in Canada.

The motors affected include:

E15-PW, E15-4W, E15-7W
E30-4T, E30-7T
F20-4W, F20-7W
F23-4FJ, F23-7FJ
F25-4W, F25-6W, F25-9W
F50-4T, F50-6T, F50-9T

NRC also revised the classification for the AeroTech F14J, which is no longer in production.

AeroTech wishes to thank NRC officials for their revision of the classifications.

The revised approval certificate may be downloaded in PDF format from the "Regulatory" page of the Resource Library.

The Tripoli Motor Testing (TMT) committee of the Tripoli Rocketry Association has certified two new high-power RMS™ reload kits

The Tripoli Motor Testing (TMT) committee of the Tripoli Rocketry Association has certified two new high-power RMS™ reload kits using AeroTech’s "Warp-9™" propellant, the 38mm I1299N-P and the 75mm K1499N-P.

The I1299N-P generates the highest thrust ever produced by an `I`-class hobby rocket motor, exceeding 330 pounds. The K1499N-P is perfect for use as a short, high-performance booster in a multi-stage rocket, developing nearly 430 pounds of thrust. Delivered specific impulse (propellant performance efficiency) was measured at 224.6 seconds for the I1299N-P and 223.1 sec for the K1499N-P.

Reload kit designation I1299N-P K1499N-P
AeroTech part no. 09129P 11149P
RMS hardware 38/480 75/1280
Total impulse, (N-sec) 423 1,322
Burn time (sec) 0.32 0.88
Propellant weight (g) 192 604
Loaded motor weight (g) 422 1,741
Retail price $49.99 $129.99

Warp-9 reloads are currently sold in a plugged configuration because of the tendency of Warp-9 propellant to occasionally "snuff out" a delay charge, due to the extremely fast chamber pressure decay rate. Rockets using Warp-9 motors must employ a timer, altimeter or radio-actuated recovery system.

AeroTech is now accepting orders for the new Warp-9 reloads and anticipates shipments to dealers to begin in January. Rouse-Tech has the new 75/1280 hardware needed for the K1499N-P in stock and available for immediate delivery.

Click here to download the official TMT certification document for the I1299N-P in PDF format. Click here to download the K1499N-P document. Motor assembly drawings and instructions are also available for download from the Resource Library.

Updated 10/24/06: AeroTech Statement on New ATF Regulations Effective October 10, 2006

On October 10, 2006 new regulations promulgated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) will take effect. The new rules limit the propellant weight of rocket motors and reload kits that are permitted to be sold without federal licensing and storage requirements. On that date only those rocket motors "containing no more than 62.5 grams of total propellant weight, and designed as single-use motors or as reload kits capable of reloading no more than 62.5 grams of propellant into a reusable motor casing" will be exempt. A copy of the ATF final rule may be downloaded in PDF format by clicking here.

The bottom line for AeroTech consumers and dealers is that all rocket motors and reload kits containing more than 62.5 grams assembled propellant weight may not be sold to anyone who does not possess an ATF explosive permit or license. This includes most AeroTech “Easy Access” and “Restricted Access” reloads as well as the G33J reload kit for the RMS-29/40-120 motor. In addition, AeroTech/RCS will no longer be permitted to sell these products to dealers who do not possess the necessary ATF dealer license.

AeroTech Announces New Products at NARAM-48

AeroTech introduced a number of new products during the "Manufacturer`s Forum" held on Tuesday, August 1st at NARAM-48 in Phoenix, Arizona.

After a recap of new products and sales programs that were released earlier in 2006, AeroTech President Gary Rosenfield stated that production quantities of the new 29mm G77R Redline™ single-use motor previously announced in May (P/N 77704, 77707 and 77710) were delivered to dealers at NARAM-48 and had already been flown a number of times. On Sunday, Bob Sanford demonstrated the G77R in his AeroTech "Arreaux™" rocket for a perfect flight.

The final design of the G77R was modified slightly to increase the total impulse. The NAR-certified version now develops 105 N-sec of power. It ships with a color-coded bondable aft thrust ring, a FirstFire Jr. igniter and is priced at $19.99 each, in delay times of 4, 7 and 10 seconds.

A new motor closure adapter for the previously-released EFC-1™ Electronic Forward Closure™ was shown, part no. EFC29-4. This adapter allows the use of the EFC-1 with the model rocket RMS-29/40-120 hardware, further expanding the versatility of the electronic delay timing device. The EFC29-4 is available now at a suggested retail price of $24.95.

Next, Gary unveiled to NARAM-48 participants a new 29mm single-use `G` motor, the G79W (P/N 77904, 77907 and 77910). This motor is a White Lightning™ equivalent to the G77R and delivers 112 N-sec of total impulse with a burn time of 1.4 seconds. Like the G77R, the G79W is shipped with a color-coded bondable aft thrust ring, a FirstFire Jr. igniter and is priced at $19.99 each, in delay times of 4, 7 and 10 seconds.

For the past year or so, AeroTech has been working on a new type of rocket motor concept called the Loadable Motor System™ or LMS™ (patent pending). The LMS was going to be applied initially to the AeroTech model rocket motor lineup in the form of a Limited-Use Reloadable™ (LUR™) F20W Econojet™. Plans change, and the first motor to benefit from the new motor technology was the LMS K250W released earlier this year. The LMS idea was then reapplied to the F20W and resulted in the development of F20W/L LMS motor kits (P/N 61904 and 61907). The F20W/L is a 2-pack of F20W motors in kit form. They are easily assembled in just a few minutes with 5-minute epoxy. The F20W/L motors kits are priced at $27.99 per 2-pack, a savings of $4 over the assembled equivalent Econojets, and are shipped with color-coded bondable aft thrust rings. A key advantage of the LMS is the ability to change or modify delays, and the appropriate delay kits are specified on the LMS motor kit instructions.

Gary mentioned that AeroTech dealers have been requesting a means to ship motors larger than the F20W and F42T Econojets without a hazmat charge. As a result of this customer feedback, AeroTech has redesigned and recertified the popular G64W RMS-29/40-120 reload kit as a 2-grain design, which can now be shipped USPS Parcel Post® with no hazmat charge. Price and delay times will remain the same.

There was "one more thing". AeroTech has applied the LMS concept to the G77R and G79R designs, and is releasing the G77R and G79W in LMS motor kit form as the G77R/L (P/N 77604, 77607 and 77610) and G79W/L (P/N 77804, 77807 and 77810). These motor kits produce identical performance to their preassembled counterparts, but at an even lower retail price of $17.99 each and are the only `G` class single-use motors that may be shipped via USPS Parcel Post® with no hazmat fees. They also include the color-coded bondable aft thrust ring and FirstFire Jr. igniter and will be available in the same time delays as the pre-built versions. All LMS motor kits will be available dealer direct only for the foreseeable future.

Finally, Gary revealed that all future production AeroTech 29mm single-use motors will be shipping with color-coded bondable aft thrust rings.

AeroTech Unveils New Products at LDRS-25

AeroTech introduced several new products at LDRS-25 in Amarillo, Texas on June 29 through July 4.

The product that seemed to generate the most excitement was the "Electronic Forward Closure™", or EFC™ (part no. EFC-1, $169.95 suggested retail). The EFC is a timer-based electronic recovery system deployment module that attaches to the top of any RMS™-29, 38 or 54mm reloadable rocket motor. It includes a reusable glow-plug ejection charge ignition system that eliminates the need for electric matches and similar one-time use devices commonly employed with other electronic deployment systems. A robust anodized aluminum housing protects the unit from mechanical shock and exposure to ejection charge residue, and an integral ejection charge holder retains up to 3 grams of black powder.

Easy to set up and use, it was flown at LDRS in Joe Danjou`s LOC Minie-Magg™ using an AeroTech 38mm H999N-P Warp-9™ rocket motor for propulsion. After a perfect 0.33 second boost and pre-set 8-second time delay, the EFC deployed the parachute at apogee.

The EFC may be programmed to deliver a time delay of one to over 6,000 seconds from motor burnout, in one-second increments.

New motor forward closures were released that adapt the EFC-1 to the various size high-power RMS motor casings, including an extended version for the long-burn 54mm reloads. Part no. EFC29-1 is the 29mm closure ($24.95), EFC38-1 is the 38mm Closure ($39.95), EFC54-1 is the standard length 54mm closure ($53.95) and EFC54-2 is the extended length 54mm closure ($69.95). An avionics combo pack (part no. EFC-CP) is also being offered that includes the EFC-1 and one each of all the motor closures for $339.95 suggested retail, a nearly $20 savings. As a bonus feature, all of the EFC motor closures were designed to eliminate the need for the delay o-ring and forward delay spacer, simplifying motor assembly.

Along with the EFC hardware products, AeroTech introduced an ejection charge kit 12-pack (part no. ECK-1, $5.95), which includes 12 each 1.4 gram ejection charges and 1/2" diameter vinyl caps designed to fit the EFC`s ejection charge holder.

Click here to download an instruction and specification sheet for the EFC-1 in PDF format.

Full Line of AeroTech Model Rocket and High-Power Motors and Reload Kits Now Authorized in Canada

AeroTech has been granted Canadian authorizations from the Chief Inspector of Explosives of the Explosives Branch (EB) of Natural Resources Canada for virtually the entire line of its model rocket and high-power rocket motors and RMS™ reload kits.

Until these authorizations were received, only the AeroTech Easy Access™ line of high-power reload kits and a limited selection of model rocket single-use motors and reloads could be sold in Canada without users and dealers obtaining a special importation permit from the Canadian government. These new authorizations cover the entire line of AeroTech motors, RMS reload kits and Reload Delay Kits (RDKs) that were available as of approximately February 2006, including the recently-certified G77R single-use motors.

In addition, all AeroTech model rocket single-use motors and reload kits are now classified as UN class 1.4C, UN number 0351 for shipment within Canada. This is expected to greatly improve the availability of AeroTech model rocket motor products in Canada as the cost of shipping will be dramatically reduced.

Copies of the 1.4C and 1.3C Canadian authorizations (including a comprehensive listing of all products affected) may be downloaded in PDF format from the "Regulatory" page of the AeroTech Resource Library.

AeroTech Introduces the First Black Max™ Reloads for 38mm RMS™
The Tripoli Motor Testing (TMT) committee of the Tripoli Rocketry Association has certified two new Easy Access™ RMS™ reload kits using AeroTech’s fast-burning "Black Max™" propellant, the 38/480 I225FJ-M and the 38/720 I364FJ-M. Technical details on these motors are as follows:

Reload kit designation H250G-M I245G-M
AeroTech part no. 08250M 09245M
RMS hardware 29/240 38/360
Total impulse, (N-sec) 231 351
Burn time (sec) 0.9 1.4
Propellant weight (g) 116.3 181.3
Loaded motor weight (g) 256 365
Suggested retail price $24.00 $34.00

These reloads set new records for the highest delivered specific impulse (propellant performance efficiency) ever produced by an AeroTech RMS motor, surpassing even the recently released H999N-P, at 233.7 sec for the H669N-P, 232.5 sec for the J1299N-P and 227.2 sec for the J1999N-P.

All Warp-9 reloads will be sold in a plugged configuration because of the tendency of Warp-9 propellant to occasionally "snuff out" a delay charge, due to the extremely fast chamber pressure decay rate. Rockets using Warp-9 motors must employ a timer, altimeter or radio-actuated recovery system.

RCS is now accepting orders for the new Warp-9 reloads and anticipates shipments to dealers to begin in mid-May.

Redesigned K250W-P Motor Tripoli Certified

The legendary AeroTech K250W motor has been recertified by the Tripoli Motor Testing (TMT) committee as an 83% K with an 8.6 second burn time. See the K250W news dated 11/30/05 below.

Production of the redesigned K250W will commence shortly and shipments to dealers should begin in approximately 2 weeks.

The following is an abridged version of the announcement from Tripoli TMT containing only the K250W information. TMT also tested and certified a number of other motor types at the same time as the K250W. Additional certification announcements will be posted in the next few days pending advance notification of AeroTech`s dealer network.

To All,

I am pleased to announce approval of a new motor system from AeroTech/RCS, Gary Rosenfield, head chef.

The K250W-P has been redesigned from its single-use offering, and is the first Loadable Motor System (LMS) load. The Loadable Motor System is supplied as a case, all the bits required to assemble the motor with the exception of the closures (a standard 54mm aft closure, and extended plugged forward closure), which are not supplied and are the only reusable parts of the motor. The single piece grain is a modified D/C slot style geometry that comes in a special length aluminum case with phenolic liner, an aft grain spacer ring and an Aluminum forward seal disk. The K250W comes in as an 83% K, 8.6 second burn motor. The profile is a rise to 80 pounds of thrust, maintaining that to the 4 second point where there is a straight tail-off from 80 pounds to zero over the final 4.6 seconds.

Congrats to Gary and his team!!!!

Paul Holmes
Chairman, Tripoli Motor Testing

AeroTech H999N-P "Warp-9" Bowling Ball Loft Motor Tripoli Certified

The Tripoli Motor Testing (TMT) committee of the Tripoli Rocketry Association has certified the first AeroTech RMS™ reload kit using "Warp-9™" propellant, the H999N-P.

The H999N-P reload fits RMS-38/360 AeroTech, Dr. Rocket™ or Rouse-Tech™ reloadable motor hardware and was specifically designed for this year`s `H`-powered Bowling Ball Loft contest at LDRS. It is also useful whenever an extremely high-thrust, relatively low impulse motor is desired.

The motor generates a total impulse of 320 N-sec (100% H), with a burn time of 0.33 sec and a peak thrust of over 250 pounds. Loaded motor weight is 331 grams (0.73 lbs), propellant weight is 144.0 grams (0.32 lbs). The delivered specific impulse (propellant performance efficiency) of the H999N-P is among the highest ever produced by an AeroTech RMS motor (or any other hobby rocket motor for that matter), at 226.6 sec.

Warp-9 propellant (RCS propellant part no. ISP-P-8223AL) was originally formulated for Orbital`s Pegasus™ launch vehicle fin motors. Warp-9 exhibits a yellow-white exhaust plume with a minimum of smoke. Unlike some of our competitors, AeroTech is not afraid to use burn rate catalysts when necessary to achieve a design goal; in this case the goal was to produce the highest thrust `H` class propulsion available to the consumer. The H999N-P develops nearly double the average thrust of the closest competing motor!

The H999N-P will initially be sold in a "plugged" configuration only. Rockets using the H999N-P motor must employ a timer, altimeter or radio-actuated recovery system.

AeroTech has plans to release additional Warp-9 reloads in a variety of motor diameters and lengths and with equally outrageous time-thrust profiles.

AeroTech is now accepting orders for the H999N-P reload kit and anticipates dealer shipments to begin in late April.

A typical time-thrust curve of the H999N-P motor and a copy of the official TMT announcement may be downloaded in PDF format by clicking here. NOTE: The sine wave in the beginning of the thrust curve is an artifact of the TMT data acquisition system and is not representative of actual motor performance characteristics.
