AeroTech Receives Eight New California State Fire Marshal Rocket Motor and Reload Kit Approvals
The California Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) has issued classification approvals for three AeroTech model rocket single-use motors and five high-power RMS™ rocket motor reload kits.

AeroTech Releases RMS™ Delay Drilling Tool
AeroTech is releasing a new delay drilling tool for use with its line of 18-38mm RMS™ and RMS-Plus™ reloadable motors.

The RMS Delay Drilling Tool™ (or RDDT™, P/N T082510-1) is designed for shortening RMS and RMS-Plus delay elements to adjust the time delay of an AeroTech RMS reloadable motor. This tool is a “stand-alone” unit and replaces the Delay Drilling Adapter™ (P/N T062705-1) which is being discontinued. The RDDT consists of a machined drill tool body and a 1/4” stub drill bit with an attached knob. The tool also has a provision for calibration, as the tip of the drill bit must be flush with the end of the tool body for accurate use. Though adjusted initially at the factory, a set screw placed within the knob makes any necessary readjustment easy.

The ends of the tool are counterbored with recesses that are labeled with 4 or 8 second reductions in the delay time. To use, the RMS or RMS-Plus delay element is placed into the desired end of the tool and held firmly in place, the drill bit is inserted and the knob is rotated clockwise until the bit is fully seated in the delay and no resistance is felt. In addition, a supplied 1/16” thick washer may be placed between the drill tool body and the drill knob to shorten the delay to an intermediate value.

As is always the case with drilled RMS delays, the delay element should be installed in the motor with the drilled end facing the propellant grains (or away from the ejection charge) for best delay accuracy. Also, no delay should be shortened to less than 4 seconds.

AeroTech is planning to eventually sell most RMS reloads in only the longest certified delay, so the RMS Delay Drilling Tool will be essential for the future use of the RMS line of products.

NAR S&T Certifies High-Power ‘G’ Reload for AeroTech RMS-29/40-120 Motor
The National Association of Rocketry (NAR) Standards & Testing (S&T) Committee has certified a new high-power reload for AeroTech’s Reloadable Motor System™ (RMS™) 29/40-120 motor hardware.

The HP-G138T-14A is AeroTech’s first “high-power” reload for its popular RMS-29/40-120 “model rocket” motor hardware. It is a “high-power” motor due to a propellant weight exceeding 62.5 grams and an average thrust exceeding 80 newtons. The HP-G138T-14A designation includes the prefix “HP-” in anticipation of new National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) labeling requirements that will become mandatory upon approval of the next revision of NFPA 1125, “Code for the Manufacture of Model Rocket and High Power Rocket Motors”, which clearly designates ‘G’ motors with certain physical and performance characteristics as high-power. It features a “linerless” design with a single long propellant grain and uses AeroTech’s new Blue Thunder™ propellant which produces a beautiful blue exhaust jet studded with prominent “mach diamonds”. The HP-G138T-14A will be available in a 14 second delay time that is intended to be adjusted using a 1/4” drill bit or AeroTech’s new delay drilling tool, which is scheduled to be released shortly.

The NAR’s certified total impulse for the HP-G138T-14A is 157.1 N-sec, nearly a full ‘G’ class. The time-thrust curve is an unusual “progressive” style with an initial thrust of approximately 20 pounds at ignition that gradually rises to a peak thrust of nearly 43 pounds near burnout. Other statistics include a burn time of 1.1 seconds, an average thrust of 138 newtons, a peak thrust of 190.1 newtons, propellant mass of 70.4 grams and an initial mass of 148 grams. The delivered specific impulse (Isp) of the HP-G138T-14A is 227.6 seconds. It may be used in most rocket kits designed for 29 X 124mm motors including all AeroTech kits.

The HP-G138T-14A reload kit will be available from AeroTech’s authorized dealer network at a suggested retail price of $18.99 each. Being a high-power motor, it may only be sold to those consumers 18 years of age or older possessing a NAR or Tripoli “Level 1” certification. AeroTech is accepting orders for the HP-G138T-14A now and anticipates dealer shipments to begin in approximately 2 weeks. The HP-G138T-14A is being submitted to the California Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) for approval of sale & use in California.

Redesigned J1999N-P Certified by TMT
The J1999N-P reload for the RMS-54/1280 motor hardware has been redesigned by AeroTech and certified by Tripoli Motor Testing (TMT) as the J1799N-P.

The J1799N-P replaces the J1999N-P that was decertified by TMT and withdrawn from sale after a number of failures were experienced by consumers during LDRS-29. The J1799N-P delivers a total impulse of 1066 N-sec over a burn time of 0.60 seconds with a peak thrust of over 476 pounds.

AeroTech has produced a "repair kit" that consumers possessing unfired J1999N-P reloads manufactured prior to July 2010 will be able to obtain at no cost through any authorized AeroTech high-power dealer. This kit includes three replacement propellant grains, a new nozzle, grain spacer o-rings and revised instructions. Customers are requested to return their unfired J1999N-P nozzle(s) and instructions to their dealer to receive the repair kit.

The complete J1799N-P reload kit (P/N 10179P) will be available for purchase from AeroTech’s dealers at a suggested retail price of $119.99 each. AeroTech anticipates shipments to its dealers to begin in approximately 2 weeks. The J1799N-P is being submitted to the California Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) for approval of sale & use in California.

NAR S&T Certifies New AeroTech F30FJ Black Max Model Rocket Motor
The National Association of Rocketry (NAR) Standards & Testing (S&T) Committee has certified AeroTech’s new 24 X 95mm F30FJ single-use model rocket motor.

The F30FJ features a molded phenolic casing with a built-in thrust ring, a molded plastic bulkhead and uses AeroTech’s Black Max™ propellant which produces a dense black exhaust. The F30FJ will be available in three time delays: F30-4FJ (P/N 63004), F30-6FJ (P/N 63006) and F30-8FJ (P/N 63008).

The NAR’s certified total impulse for the F30FJ is 47 N-sec. Other statistics include a burn time of 1.51 seconds, an average thrust of 30.4 newtons, peak thrust of 40.6 newtons, propellant mass of 31.2 grams and an initial mass of 70 grams. It may be used interchangeably in kits designed for other 24 X 95mm motors such as the AeroTech F32T and the black powder E9. The F30FJ weighs only slightly more than the E9, but delivers over 1.6 times the total impulse.

The F30FJ single-use motor will be available from AeroTech and its dealers at a suggested retail price of $15.99 each. AeroTech is accepting orders for the F30FJ now and anticipates shipments to its dealers to begin in approximately 4 weeks. The F30FJ is being submitted to the California Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) for approval of sale & use in California.

AeroTech Product Bulletin 2010-1: J1999N-P Reliability Issue
AeroTech has become aware of a potential issue affecting the reliability of the J1999N-P "Warp-9™" reload kit that fits AeroTech, Dr. Rocket™ and Rouse-Tech™ RMS-54/1280 hardware.

During two rocket "drag races" flown at LDRS-29 held at Lucerne Dry Lake on 6/12/10 and 6/13/10 there were four (4) observed failures of RMS-54/1280 motors loaded with J1999N reloads. All incidents involved ejection of the forward and/or aft closure at or shortly after ignition. It was reported that some or all of these motors used Copper thermite or large pyrogen-tipped initiators for ignition. AeroTech believes that this and other factors may have contributed to the failures, but until AeroTech has performed additional research and investigation into the incidents we cannot yet arrive at a definitive explanation.

AeroTech`s dealers are requested not to sell, and consumers are advised not to operate J1999N reloads until further notice. AeroTech is now in the process of designing and testing a revised version of the J1999N that will have demonstrated acceptable reliability, with specific instructions concerning approved ignition methods and assembly procedures.

Once the revised J1999N is approved by Tripoli Motor Testing (TMT), AeroTech anticipates that it will produce a "repair kit" that consumers possessing unfired J1999N reloads will be able to obtain at no cost through any authorized AeroTech high-power dealer. This kit will likely include one or more replacement propellant grains as well as additional components and revised instructions. More specific terms and conditions of the product upgrade will be forthcoming. As always, AeroTech will honor valid warranty claims for all its products including the J1999N.

TMT Certifies Three New AeroTech High-Power RMS Motors, Completes 29 & 54mm Reload Adapter Testing
The Tripoli Motor Testing (TMT) Committee of the Tripoli Rocketry Association (TRA) has certified three new AeroTech high-power rocket motor reload kits in 54mm, 75mm and 98mm sizes, and has completed testing and certification of AeroTech’s 29 & 54mm Reload Adapter Systems™.

The new reloads include the I170G-10A which is designed for AeroTech, Dr. Rocket™ or Rouse-Tech™ RMS™-54/426 motor hardware, the L1520T-PS which fits RMS-75/3840 hardware and the L400W-PS which fits RMS-98/5120 hardware.

The I170G-10A is AeroTech’s sixth reload kit for the RMS-54/426 “soda can” motor hardware. The reload uses AeroTech’s Mojave Green™ propellant and delivers a certified total impulse of 419 N-sec, a peak thrust of 47 pounds and a burn time of 2.4 seconds, with a propellant weight of 218 grams and a total weight of 530 grams.

The L1520T-PS is AeroTech’s second Blue Thunder™ propellant reload for the 75mm RMS motor line. The motor delivers a gently curved thrust profile with a peak thrust of nearly 400 pounds, a certified total impulse of 3,716 N-sec and a burn time of 2.4 seconds, with a propellant weight of 1,773 grams and a total weight of 3,620 grams.

The L400W-PS is AeroTech’s third long-burning reload for RMS-98mm hardware and the first to be made available to its Level 2 certified customers. This “moonburning” grain geometry motor uses AeroTech’s White Lightning™ propellant and delivers a certified total impulse of 4,642 N-sec, a burn time of 12.2 seconds and a peak thrust of 173 pounds, with a propellant weight of 2,650 grams and a total weight of 5,089 grams.

TMT also completed testing of the new 29mm Reload Adapter System (RAS) with RMS-29/360 hardware and certified the use of the 54mm RAS with RMS-54/426 reloads in both 54/852 and 54/1280 cases. It should be noted that the use of the RAS in the RMS-29/360 case requires one “standard length” 29mm spacer as well as an “extended length” 29mm spacer for proper operation.

Manufacturer suggested retail prices (MSRPs) for the new motors are $39.99 for the I170G-10A (P/N 09170M) $188.99 for the L1520T-PS (P/N 12152P) and $278.99 for the L400W-PS (P/N 12400P).

AeroTech Announces 29mm Special RMS Hardware Promotion
AeroTech Consumer Aerospace is announcing another exciting offer in its Reloadable Motor System™ (RMS™) hardware line, the “29mm Special” RMS hardware promotion. Tripoli Motor Testing Committee Certifies 29mm & 54mm AeroTech Reload Adapter Systems
The Tripoli Motor Testing Committee (TMT) of the Tripoli Rocketry Association (TRA) has certified 29 & 54mm reload adapter systems (RAS) for use with AeroTech`s RMS reloadable motors.

The 29mm RAS is currently certified for use with the 29/120, 29/180 and 29/240 cases. The 54mm RAS has been certified for use with the 54/852, 54/1280, 54/1706 and 54/2560 cases. Additional certification of the systems for use with the 29/360 and 54/426 cases is pending.

The RAS allow the use of shorter (lower power) RMS reload kits within a specific motor casing, reducing the number of cases necessary to fly a wide range of AeroTech reloads. The RAS consists of three components: A "floating" forward closure that can be positioned anywhere inside the length of an RMS casing; one or more tubular "case spacers" that sit immediately forward of the closure; and a threaded retaining ring that holds the assembly together.

The standard retaining rings have a large opening that permits the ejection charge end of the floating forward closure to protrude beyond the end of the case when no case spacers are being used. The floating forward closures have been designed with deeper ejection charge wells that accept heavier weight ejection charges and also allow the placement of the ejection charge cap within the well instead of only on top of it.

Existing AeroTech reload kits can be loaded into RMS motors using the RAS with no modifications necessary. All reload kit parts are used in their familiar positions and configuration.

The primary advantage to using the adapter system is cost. Consumers will be able to fly reloads spanning a range of four or more cases by using only two RMS casings. This translates to a hardware savings of $48 for the 29mm motors and $200 for the 54mm. A slight disadvantage is that 29mm motors loaded with the RAS will be approximately 1.77" longer and 28 grams heavier per case spacer used, and 54mm motors will be 3.34" longer and 109 grams heavier per case spacer. AeroTech is recommending a maximum of two case spacers be installed in a particular motor for ease of assembly, but there is no technical reason why a larger number of spacers could not be used.

The 29mm RAS (P/N 29RAS) will be sold as a package which includes the floating forward closure, two standard case spacers, one extended case spacer (for use only with the 29/360 case) and a standard retaining ring for an introductory price of $29.99. The 54mm RAS (P/N 54RAS) package includes the floating forward closure, two case spacers and a standard retaining ring for an introductory price of $49.99. Optional “anchor” retaining rings for both systems may be made available as a future release.

AeroTech is now taking dealer pre-orders for the new 29 & 54mm reload adapter systems and deliveries are expected to begin in about 4-5 weeks. Customers are encouraged to place orders early since consumer demand for the new reload adapter systems is expected to be high, as it still is for the 38mm RAS.

Tripoli Motor Testing Committee Certifies AeroTech Metalstorm “Sparky" Motors
The Tripoli Motor Testing Committee (TMT) of the Tripoli Rocketry Association (TRA) has certified one new single-use high-power motor and three new high-power reload kits using AeroTech’s unique and exciting new "sparky” propellant, dubbed Metalstorm™.

The new motors include the 29 X 124mm single-use HP-G75M, which will be sold in 4, 7 and 10 second delay times, and three RMS™ reload kits, the 38/360 H170M-14A, the 38/720 J340M-14A and the 54/1706 K540M-14A. The reload kits fit AeroTech, Rouse-Tech™ and Dr. Rocket™ RMS hardware, and the single-use HP-G75M will power most popular 29mm-capable kits and all of AeroTech`s mid-power kits. The G75M designation includes the "HP-" prefix in anticipation of proposed National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) code language which will classify all sparky motors, including `G` class and smaller, as "high-power", requiring NAR or Tripoli user certification for purchase and use.

Metalstorm is AeroTech’s latest propellant designed for its single-use and RMS reloadable motors. It has completely different visual, audible and performance characteristics than the other sparky propellants currently on the market. Metalstorm ignites easily and produces a large, brilliant white exhaust plume, a much longer yellow-orange dense spark tail, plentiful white sparks that fan out in flight and an ample volume of white smoke.

Metalstorm’s high density and relatively high specific impulse results in a higher delivered total impulse for a given volume than some other sparky propellants. This characteristic makes Metalstorm "the performance sparky". Motor burn times using Metalstorm propellant are slightly longer than those produced by White Lightning™, but the total impulse is only slightly lower.

Metalstorm motors assemble in an identical fashion to other AeroTech reloads fitting the same hardware. Cleanup is easy with none of the problems plaguing earlier sparky motors.

As with all rocket motors using spark-generating propellants, special precautions must be taken to avoid fires around the launch pad by clearing the immediate area of all combustible materials in accordance with applicable fire and safety codes.

AeroTech Announces 38mm Special RMS Hardware Promotion
AeroTech Consumer Aerospace is announcing an exciting offer in its 38mm Reloadable Motor System™ (RMS™) hardware line, the “38mm Special” RMS hardware promotion. This promotion is intended to allow the inexpensive purchase of a popular range of 38mm RMS hardware by all high-power rocketry consumers, especially those new to the hobby.

The 38mm Special RMS hardware promotion consists of an AeroTech RMS-38/360 motor casing and a 38mm aft closure, along with the AeroTech 38mm Reload Adapter System™ (RAS™). The Reload Adapter System includes a “floating” forward closure, a retaining ring and two case spacers. The six-piece 38mm Special Hardware set will allow customers to fly 16 AeroTech 38mm RMS reload kits ranging from ‘G’ to ‘I’ class, that are normally intended to fit three different length 38mm RMS motors. These reload kits vary in total impulse from 109 to 360 newton-seconds. An uncertified consumer can fly ‘G’ motor power using the 38mm Special hardware set, and then certify Level 1 with their choice of a dozen ‘H’ & ‘I’ AeroTech reloads.

The manufacturer`s suggested retail price (MSRP) for the 38mm Special is only $59.99, a savings of $48.00 over the MSRP of the individual components, and $119.00 in savings when you consider the equivalent added utility of the Reload Adapter System.

AeroTech Receives Seven New California State Fire Marshal Rocket Motor and Reload Kit Approvals
The California Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) has issued classification approvals for one new AeroTech single-use model rocket motor in three time delays and six new high-power RMS™ rocket motor reload kits, including three Karl E. Baumann (KEB™) Signature Line™ reloads.

TMT Certifies Three New AeroTech High-Power RMS ‘K’-Class Motors
The Tripoli Motor Testing (TMT) Committee of the Tripoli Rocketry Association (TRA) has certified two new AeroTech 54mm and one new 75mm Reloadable Motor System™ (RMS™) ‘K’-class rocket motor reload kits.

The new reloads include the K375NW-P and the K480W-P which are both designed for AeroTech, Dr. Rocket™ or Rouse-Tech™ RMS-54/2560 motor hardware, and the K1000T which fits RMS-75/2560 hardware.

The K375NW is AeroTech’s first 54mm Boost-Sustain™ motor and the latest one to be certified since the 38mm I59WN Boost-Sustain reload was submitted for National Association of Rocketry (NAR) certification in September, 2007. It uses a coreburning Warp-9™ grain placed at the aft (nozzle) end of the motor followed by four coreburning grains using a slower-burning version of AeroTech’s White Lightning™ propellant. Upon ignition, all five grains burn together and produce a boost thrust phase of 300 pounds for slightly over 0.5 seconds until burnout of the Warp-9 grain, which is immediately followed by a sustain burn from the remainder of the White Lightning grains of approximately 80 pounds, for a total burn time of nearly 6 seconds. The effect is remarkable and the transition from boost to sustain can be clearly seen on the test stand and in flight.

The K480T is in the identical form factor as the popular AeroTech K700W reload but uses the slower White Lightning formulation as in the K375NW Boost-Sustain motor. As a result, the K480W burns significantly longer that the K700W, delivering a nearly 4.5 second total burn time with a peak (initial) thrust of 210 pounds and a regressive thrust trace.

The K1000T is AeroTech’s first Blue Thunder™ propellant reload for the 75mm RMS motor line. The motor delivers a reasonably flat thrust profile with a peak thrust of nearly 260 pounds and a burn time of 2.5 seconds. More 75mm Blue Thunder reloads are under development and are planned for release later this year.

Manufacturer suggested retail prices (MSRPs) for the new motors are $159.99 for the K375NW-P (P/N 11375P) $149.99 for the K480W-P (P/N 11480P) and $164.99 for the K1000T (P/N 11100P).

AeroTech Lowers Prices on Five Single-Grain 54mm RMS Reload Kits
AeroTech Consumer Aerospace has redesigned its five single-grain 54mm “soda can” motor reload kits to use less expensive components and has significantly reduced prices on the entire range of reloads for the Reloadable Motor System™ (RMS™) 54/426 hardware.

The modifications, which include the substitution of a lower-cost liner and a smaller nozzle insert (the same as those used on the 29 & 38mm RMS reload kits), have been reviewed and approved by the Tripoli Motor Testing (TMT) Committee of the Tripoli Rocketry Association (TRA). The nozzle throat areas are identical to the previous versions and the ballistic performances of the new loads remain unchanged within statistical variation.

Suggested retail prices for the I115W (P/N 09115M), I229T (P/N 09229M), I117FJ (P/N 09117M) and I215R (P/N 09215M) reload kits have been reduced from $49.99 to $39.99 each, in line with the prices for AeroTech’s 38mm reloads of comparable power. The retail price for the I599N Warp-9™ reload kit (P/N 09599P) has been reduced from $59.99 to $49.99 each.

The redesigned reload kits require use of the new 54mm small nozzle aft closure, P/N 54ACCSN, which was previously released in October 2009 following announcement of the J99N-P endburning reload for the 54/852 RMS motor hardware. The 54mm small nozzle aft closure retails for $39.99.

AeroTech is currently looking at the feasibility of using the smaller nozzle design with additional reload kits for the RMS-54/852 motor as a means to reduce prices on the J275W, J460T and possibly other reloads.

In related news, AeroTech is working on a sixth reload kit for the 54/426 motor using its popular Mojave Green™ propellant, for release in the Spring.
