AeroTech DMS 54mm Motor Thrust Ring Advisory
Dear AeroTech/RCS Dealers and Customers,

It has come to our attention that there have been two (2) reported instances of the factory glued-on thrust rings of 54mm DMS Disposable Motor System single-use rocket motors breaking off the motor casing during flight. One was a K535W, and the other was an L1000W that was flown at the recent Midwest Power launch. This usually results in the bare motor flying through the rocket and into the air, often in an unstable and unpredictable manner.

Customers are requested to NOT fly 54mm DMS motors using only the factory installed thrust ring and to take one of the following steps before flight to mitigate this problem:

1. Tightly wrap two layers of 1” wide masking tape around the thrust ring and motor case junction, and tightly friction fit the motor into the motor mount tube with masking tape. Using this method, the flyer should still be able to make use of their rocket’s existing motor retainer system.

2. Tightly wrap a layer of 1” wide masking tape around the motor case immediately adjacent to the thrust ring, to a thickness of 1/16”. Install the motor in the motor mount tube and tightly wrap 2 layers of masking tape around the motor and motor mount tube or motor retainer junction.

3. Remove the glued-on thrust ring and tightly wrap a layer of 1” wide masking tape around the motor case, flush with the nozzle end of the case, to a thickness of 1/16”. Install the motor in the motor mount tube and tightly wrap 2 layers of masking tape around the motor and motor mount tube or motor retainer junction.

4. Use a motor block within the motor mount tube that will transfer the thrust of the motor to the airframe and prevent the forward movement of the motor within the tube. Install the motor in the motor mount tube and tightly wrap 2 layers of masking tape around the motor and motor mount tube or motor retainer junction.

AeroTech is continuing to examine and evaluate the situation and is actively working on a solution that we believe will conclusively solve the problem in the near future. Until then, new production 54mm DMS motors will be shipped without thrust rings and customers will need to apply their own tape thrust rings or use a motor block per steps 3 or 4 above. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused for our dealers and customers. Your understanding and patience is appreciated, and we thank you for your continued support.

54mm Reload Adapter System Short Case Spacer Now Available
AeroTech Consumer Aerospace is pleased to announce the arrival of the 54mm short spacer for use with the 54mm Reload Adapter System (part 54RAS). The short forward closure case spacer (part 54SFCCS) allows for the use of the current 54RAS with the AeroTech 54/2800 casing. The short spacer is 1.823” long and will be offered separately for customers who have previously purchased the 54RAS. Beginning October 12, 2015 all 54RAS will include the short spacer. Pricing for the 54SFCCS is $7.99 when purchased separately. The price for the 54RAS will be $57.99 and includes 2 standard case spacers, a short case spacer, a floating forward closure and a forward closure retaining ring. The system will allow the AeroTech 54/2800 casing to be used with 54mm reload kits designed for the 54/2560 casing and the 54/1706 casing.

RMS-EZ Notice
Dear Dealers and Customers,

This notice is to inform you of a potential issue with the recently released AeroTech 38mm "RMS-EZ" reload kits with the modular forward bulkheads. We have been made aware of a small number of early ejection events occurring while using these kits. These incidents do not appear to be tied to any particular lot number(s) but instead seem to be related to the temperature cycling of a particular batch of adhesive used to bond the delay element into the modular forward bulkhead. We were able to duplicate the problem at our facility by repeatedly temperature cycling certain RMS-EZ reload kits over a period of several days.

RCS/AeroTech is actively researching the delay adhesive issue, but until a solution is found we request that flyers and dealers use one of the recently-released RMS-Plus "Complete Reload Delay Kits” (CRDKs) instead of the modular bulkhead supplied with the RMS-EZ kit. The CRDKs are being distributed free of charge to all RCS/AeroTech customers and can be installed in standard legacy 38mm RMS forward closures. The time delay of each CRDK can be adjusted using the AeroTech RMS Delay Drilling Tool (RDDT). All the CRDKs are supplied in the longest delay time available for the particular intended motor configuration.

Also, RCS will begin shipping the RMS-EZ kits in the RMS-Plus configuration with the same shipping tube, but clearly marked as “RMS-Plus” reloads. When RMS-EZ reload kit shipments resume, they will also include a matching CRDK so that consumers will have the option of using either delay charge solution for their rockets.

Dealers are asked to inventory their stock and advise us of the number of CRDKs they will need to retrofit RMS-EZ reload kits covered by this notice. Additionally, customers possessing any RMS-EZ reload kits are asked first to contact their respective dealer to obtain the CRDKs, if that is not convenient then they can contact RCS directly.

AeroTech Kits Begin Shipping With Motor Retainers
AeroTech is now including their 29mm aluminum motor retainer with all of their kits. This will replace the motor hook, thrust ring and the thrust ring flange. The 29mm motor retainer (#19002) is a 2-piece machined aluminum motor retainer designed to fit 29mm motor tubes. The retainer is extremely lightweight and weighs in at under 1 ounce. The retail price for the retainer is $15.99 when sold separately but is included with all AeroTech kits at no additional charge.

AeroTech Receives TRA Certification for Two New High Power DMS™ Motors
AeroTech has received Tripoli Rocketry Association (TRA) certification for two new DMS™ Disposable Motor System™ rocket motors, in 38 and 54mm diameters.

The H100W is a shorter 2-grain version of the 38mm I140W and is perfect for Level 1 certifications and general sport flying in rockets with 38mm motor mounts:

The H100W and J250W  feature filament-wound fiberglass casings, a glass-reinforced composite phenolic nozzle and a molded plastic bulkhead. All DMS motors ship with a FirstFire™ or FirstFire Jr.™ igniter and an integral thrust ring. Thrust rings on DMS motors are designed to fit standard motor retainers.

The new motors can be purchased by flyers possessing an appropriate NAR or TRA user certification. They are competitively priced at $35.99 for the H100W and $89.99 for the J250W, and should be available from AeroTech dealers in about 3-4 weeks.

The time delay of all DMS motors may be shortened using AeroTech’s Universal Delay Drilling Tool™, which is available from AeroTech and its dealers for $9.99.

Motor performance data including a sample time-thrust curve are printed on the motor label.

DMS motors are packaged in a distinctive yellow shipping tube with AeroTech logos printed on the outer spiral wrapping, and the same motor label applied to the outside of the tube for easy identification and performance evaluation by the flyer. Caps on the ends of the tube are applied externally and are easy to remove.

The DMS motor design and the Universal Delay Drilling Tool are patent pending.

L1000W Notice
Dear Dealers and Customers,

This notice is to inform you of an issue with the L1000W DMS motor.  We have been made aware of a small number of case failures with early release lot numbers.  Even though we have fired over 20 motors in development and QC testing without incident, we are issuing this notice as a precautionary measure.

RCS requests that the following L1000W DMS motors with the following lot numbers not be flown or sold.  All motors are from the time period of 6/12/14 through 9/22/14 and do not include motors manufactured after 10/27/14.


The lot codes are as follows:


101064, 101074, 102574, 102974, 102584, 102884, 102294


Some of you might wonder why it takes so long for a notice like this to be issued, first it takes time for a motor to enter circulation, secondly flyers seem to wait before flying them, thirdly news of a Cato starts out as a rumor before it finally hits my desk.


We continually monitor motor reliability (especially new ones) for issues developing in the field, many motor manufacturing processes are adjusted for safety and conformance without much fanfare.  Occasionally motors like the L1000W make a bigger splash due to their size, new construction and power.  We have now developed a modification for the L1000W which we believe will improve its reliability.  We expect to resume production and shipment of the L1000W in the near future.


We will replace any motor affected by this memo.  Dealers are asked to inventory their stock and advise us of any motors they might have covered by this notice.  Additionally customers possessing any of the above listed motor(s) are asked first to contact their respective dealer for replacement, if that is not convenient then they can contact us directly.
